When excavating in soft soil layers, since cutting tools cannot be placed in the center of the cutter head, to improve the cutting and mixing effect of the soil in the central area, a larger fishtail cutter (ram's horn cutter) can be designed in the central area, generally with the fishtail cutter advancing about 600 mm.
The design and placement of the fishtail cutter are as follows:
Firstly, the shield machine cuts the soil in two steps. The fishtail cutter first cuts the small circular cross-section soil in the central area, and then expands to the full cross-section soil cutting. That is, the fishtail cutter is designed not to be on the same plane as other cutting tools, i.e., the fishtail cutter is arranged ahead of the cutting tools, ensuring that the fishtail cutter cuts the soil first;
Secondly, the root of the fishtail cutter is designed to be conical, so that when the cutter head rotates, the soil cut by the fishtail cutter, in addition to tangential and radial movement, also adds a turning movement. This solves the problem of cutting the soil in the central part and improves the fluidity and mixing effect of the cut soil, and greatly improves the overall excavation effect of the shield machine.
When excavating in pure hard rock formations, double-edged or triple-edged rolling cutters are placed in the center of the cutter head.
The configuration of soft soil tools is crucial in the design of shield machines and pipe jacking machine tools. Whether the configuration is suitable for the geological conditions of the application project directly affects the service life, cutting effect, soil discharge, excavation speed, and construction efficiency of the shield machine.
